What are load types?
One of the essential parts of setting up your warehouse is creating relevant load types.
Creating relevant load types supports:
- Optimisation of operational processes
- Ease of movement and storage of goods
- Efficient cargo/transport allocation to your ramps
- Saving time by calculating reservation duration
In short, load types are used to define what load(s) a ramp can accept. The duration of warehouse reservations will also be based on the configuration of your load types.
Note: Load types are not warehouse specific - all active load types can be assigned to all warehouses.
What are the options?
Before you proceed with creating your load types, choose the type that is right for you and best fits your warehouse processes.
GoRamp separates load types into 2 categories: static and dynamic.
You can always assign multiple load types to a ramp/use a combination of static/dynamic load types for the same ramp. It all comes down to your needs and how your warehouse operates.
Create/Assign/Use load types:
- You can go to "Settings" > "Load types" to create and manage them.
- Once a load type is created, it needs to be assigned on a per ramp basis.
- You can go to "Settings" > "Warehouses" to access the list.
- Access each warehouse and then ramp to assign your load type selection.
Below is an interactive step-by-step guide on the topic:
Changing in-use load types/switching to a new type:
If you feel like there needs to be a change in your load type configuration, it's possible to replace/partially edit them, but there are a few things to consider:
- Dynamic load types cannot be edited after their creation.
- If you have future reservations, you shouldn't be deleting current load types.
- You can edit everything in Static load types, as long as there are no future reservations. If there are reservations, you won't be able to edit the "Loading time".
- Editing could result in reservation overlap, if you are increasing preparation/loading time.
Workflow for replacing load types in each reservation:
If you wish to change the attributes of a load type, but have future reservations with it assigned, please follow these steps:
- Create a new load type with the desired attributes (X load type).
- Leave the load type that has to be changed untouched (Y load type).
- Assign the new load type to the respective ramps.
- Find all future reservations with the Y load type.
- Change their load type to the new X type.
- Archive the old load type Y in your settings.
If you do not follow these steps and delete the old loading type, your future reservations containing the old type will be deleted.
Below in a detailed guide on the process:
What if I have multiple future reservations?
If multiple reservations are affected, it's recommended that you use "List view".
Click on the list view button inside the "Reservations" tab when you are in calendar view:
You can use the "Table editing" option to drag and drop the load type so that it's conveniently displayed.
If you are making drastic changes to the preparation time/time per unit to the new dynamic load type, please be mindful of the fact that subsequent reservations might overlap. This means that when you'll try saving a reservation, you might see an error message.
Alternative option:
If you decide that you need a change in load types, but you can still honour future reservations as they are, you should.
You can go to "Settings" > "Load types" and edit the reservation you want to eventually replace:

This option includes less manual work and chances for human error, with the same result in the end.
